BPR Interview with Kate Pankoke

Project Runway Season 4 All-Star designer, Kate Pankoke, talks about her experience on the show.

A highlight:

BPR: Which was your favorite challenge?

KP: Definitely the Wicked challenge. I had never seen Wicked and Helen and I were like holding hands and crying the whole time.

BPR: You got to see the show? I don't think we knew that.

KP: Yes, we all went to see the show. We worked all day and then we went to the show that night. Afterward, we went backstage and we were able to see the costumes close up. I even got to touch the tiara. I was dying.

BPR Interview with Kate Pankoke

Project Runway designer, Kate Pankoke was in NYC today at Macy's  as part of a special press event featuring the collections of 17 emerging designers from the Macy's Fashion Incubator program. Kate will be showcasing bridal gowns from her latest Elaya Vaughn Bridal collection.

BPR Field Reporter, Jennifer Mara, met up with Kate and sends us this interview - thanks Jen!

Kate Pankoke is just as articulate, kind and talented in person as she seemed on TV. Kate is a woman who speaks through fashion personally and professionally, living what she stands for.

The first question I asked her was if she made her own gown for her wedding this past November- she immediately replied yes, and yes, was also the answer when I asked her if she made what she was wearing today.

Tiers are a signature for this season called “Romance in Bloom.” Kate does one collection per year, usually fourteen looks.

BPR Interview with Kate Pankoke

Project Runway Season 12 designer, Kate Pankoke talks about her experience on the show.

A highlight:

BPR: We are pretty much in the dark about the model selection process.  Can you enlighten us?

KP: That is a really good question... There are some really shady things going on this season... As you know, this season the runway is supposed to be an anonymous runway...so randomly, the producers would say, "You have this model now." Sometimes we got to choose new models, sometimes we didn't, and obviously once you are accustomed to a model and you know her measurements, you really don't want to switch.

BPR: Was the winner able to choose a new model? I would think that the winner would always choose Ya.

KP: Actually, Helen's model, Molly is tied with Ya for wins!

BPR: Knowing now that Helen has won so many challenges, do you regret giving her the win in the Coney Island challenge?

KP: Not at all... and I don't think of it as me "giving the win" to Helen. I did it because I knew what she was going through. She is such a talented designer, she is a great person, and she worked just as hard as I did. Also, she really needed a pick-me-up from the previous challenge.

So, I had two choices. I could recommend her for the win, and give her a boost, or I could nominate myself - giving me two wins in a row and assuring that everyone would hate me.

I was happy to recommend Helen for the win. She deserved it. She is amazing.

BPR Interview with Kate Pankoke

Project Runway Season 11 designer, Kate Pankoke, talks about her experience on the show.

A highlight:

BPR: Did Heidi give you any idea that this would be a double elimination?

KP: No. There was no idea. I mean the thought did not even cross my mind.

BPR: So you were as surprised as we were?

KP: Yes. First I was shocked that Tu was eliminated. I started sobbing because I didn't want him to leave. Then when they called my name I was really shocked.

BPR: Were you surprised that the high-schoolers chose Patricia's design as their favorite?

KP: I was a little surprised, but a lot of the challenge was based on the networking and just how the students liked you. I mean Sam and Patricia were just so cool and talkative and so innovative. They could sell anything... When Sam tells you something is cool, you just believe that it is cool. They were more avant-garde.   Tu and I were trying to be more practical and marketable.
